The Evertree

It gave us hope. The rooted behemoth had a brownish and wood-like trunk grown up upon the skies. Each day it tries to expand its overwhelming size, covering across the above. The leaves exposed itself to the chilly night, when each moon passed by. Everyday I left the house and wander into the forest across. I saw the leaves curled up and its pigment faded as the sun fell under the edge of the world. I was walking among the familiar big plastic oaks, standing around me and in every direction, I see. I observed the quietness I knew I cannot seek as easy within this harsh lifeless reality. I continued heading down the path as I viewed this panoramic sight and approached the trunk. It stood there, alone, as I stepped closer to examine its oddity side by side with the others. This unseen plant had grown with such peculiar leaves, mixed in sizes from small to large, from straight to curvy. I’ve been thinking about the formation of the leaves. It seemed like they were grown differently. And their textures. Some pieces were rough and dry, some of them were smooth. Like they sprouted without knowing each other. This strange tree was meant to have some kind of purpose, I sensed. I looked at the standalone colossal stem. It took quite an area of dirt, as I observed its diameter. It is big, thick and the whole thing was covered entirely with tangled vines, flowers and a variety of these oddly-textured leaves. After that evening, I knew something that other people don’t. This was a tree. A real one. The last one, I presumed. And it’s dying, the leaves are withering, the vines all faded into grey, and the flora shrunk. The tree lost its power. These people couldn’t know its greatness. Their intelligence was limited to the present world as compared to the past. Today I had found out something about it. After the countless times I’ve walked the dirt path, along the trail, and amongst those plastic trees to approach such a loving beauty, I knew something wasn’t right. The tree was meant to restart life, before extinction brings them all to an end.
